Hannibal Attacks out of the Mist
£285.00
In thick fog Hannibal ambushed and massacred 15000 Roman soldiers on the banks of Lake Trasimeno. The site of the battle is just down the road from where I live in Italy, and the name of the village Ossaia originates from the word 'ossa' meaning bones. The little stream there is the Sanguinetto, from 'sangue' the word for blood. The historic facts are well known to all who live around here, and thus I felt inspired to try to capture tha chaos, confusion and terror of that day in 217BC. Here layers of history surround and enfold us, an idea which fascinates me, and often inspires my paintings.
